Before you start, make sure you have met these requirements:
To install and run Nokia Software Updater application:
PC with 1GHz or higher Pentium-compatible processor
At least 256 MB of RAM (memory)
Windows 2000 (SP4 or later) or Windows XP (SP1 or SP2) or Windows Vista
Administration rights on the PC while installing
High-speed internet connection
To connect your phone to a PC:
Fully charged, compatible Nokia phone
Compatible Nokia USB connection cable
Compatible USB port on your PC
Step 2/2: Back-up data
Personal data such as contacts, photos and messages stored in the phone memory will be deleted during phone software update. It is strongly recommended that you backup this data to your memory card before updating your phone software.
To backup to your memory card:
select Tools > Memory from the main menu
select Options > Backup phone mem.
To restore info to phone memory:
select Tools > Memory from the main menu
select Options > Restore from card

I already updated mine so I recommend this rather than an offline update. But only choose this method if you have a stable broadband connection. My phone update took for only 20 mins.

I’m trying to do the offline update (at my own risk of course
) because I don’t have an internet connection. I’ve already downloaded the NSU and the offline updator. My problem is that I just don’t know how to load the ‘installation file’ into the ‘documents and settings folder’ of NSU. I’m using windows XP Pro. Please let me know how I can combine the two together and update my phone- I really need an update coz I’m still on 3.92!!!. Please e-mail the instructions to me as soon as possible. My computer has met all requirements except for internet connection- and what if I decide to use this 5300 as a modem, will it still update? Please respond, I really need your assistance. Ok. I’ve managed to update online and my phone is now perfect. V 5.50 . Most of the features have improved. The music player now responds very fast. I think my 5300 is ok this way. Thanks

Xpress music, thanks for being so cooperative. Just one last question, there’s something new in the music player library-my track lists. It shows empty and I presume it should enable me to create playlists. But I don’t think this feature works. I’ve looked everywhere and I can’t find how to make my track lists. Please assist. Hi again. It’s possible to create a playlist straight on your phone. I’ll share this little hack for you:
Basically,
- you start by emptying the “Favorites” tracklist.
- Then go to the music library, and start adding songs in the order you want them (go to the song, and choose ‘add to favorites’ under Options).
- When all songs are added, go back to Favorites tracklist,
- and start to play it.
- Then finally, in the ‘now playing’ screen, choose Options, show tracks, again ‘Options/save as tracklist’, and give it a name.
Really a long process but a useful hack

Yes, you can do an update. RM-146 and RM-147 is pretty same, the only thing that differs both is the region setting. I think RM-146 is for Asia, Australia and RM-147 for Europe, USA and MEA(Not quite that sure).

I’m not sure if Movistar also does have a customized firmware like Vodafone….better thing to do is to contact Movistar and ask them if you can update your firmware directly on NSU.

I found the NSU docs and settings folder in “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\NSU_c25e045c6c1a4fae12dbdc” and I unpacked the content of the exe file into the folder but NSU still doesn’t detect the 5.51 update it is still saying that the latest is 4.72 can you help me? thank you

If the phone is locked to a specific network, there are chances that it’s firmware is network customized. My advice on it is to bring your phone to a Telcel branch and ask them to update your phone. Don’t worry for labor and update charges if your phone is still within the warranty period.

Yes, it do have some slight improvements over the recent firmware. The changelog can be view in this post above. This firmware version is great, it’s worth to do an update so.

You don’t need to. Just insert the 1GB card and you’re ready to set. The phone won’t get slow nor choppy either.

I am interested if the stereo bluetooth quality has been improved or not, because I found that it was quite poor for high frequency sounds especially if I played rock songs. They came out quite distorted, I mean in a bad way. I tried the 500 and the 600 series stereo Nokia headsets. They had the same quality.

I ran nokia software updater, it detected my phone, but after a while, this error always appear:
No software updates available on your phone
Downloading software update package failed. The service may be down or your internet connection may not be working properly. Try again later.
I dont think the internet connection here in our office is not working properly. I thought it was my pc. But when i tried it at home, the same error appears.
What do you think is the problem? Is there anything i can do? My current firmware version is 5.00. I want to try the offline update but i cant get or understand the whole process..

First make sure the phone is:
-It is Set in general profile
-Unlocked keypad state
-Check if the USB cables and the connector slots are clean
-Restart your internet connection-plug out and plug it
If the above tips doesn’t help. Better send your phone to the Nokia Service Center and the techs there will do the update for you. It will be free of charge if the phone is still within the warranty period.

Is your phone locked and requires you to input the security code?
If you forgot the code, better send off your phone to the Nokia Service Center in your place. You won’t be able to an firmware reflash as your phone is currently locked.

Installing this firmware might get your phone unfunctional or unstable. T-Mobile has a different firmware version for it. Better contact or visit T-Mobile website for software updates.

This update is recommended as on the previous version(V5.00) you cannot switch between profiles when using the # key. You know, it won’t switch from general to silent profile.

I think this update is for people who has older 5300, cuz I have 5300 black i think the black version was released not so long ago, and may be on the all black ones firmware is up to date, but I m not sure

i am noticed what USSD commands now not hang the phone. in v5.0 some USSD commands answers popup window NOT ALLOWED or other and it is not disappear long time (about 10 sec). Now just press any key and it is disappear.

Recently, I can’t hear the other party at all during a call, and it is not a volume control thing. As this happens, there’s a short yellow “sawtooth-like” kind of sign displayed at the top of the screen. This is not one of the screen indicators listed in the phone manual.
What does this sign stand for?
I tried to look for updates for my phone on both the Europe and Asia Nokia sites, but both tell me that my phone code (0540649) is not recognized as a proper Nokia phone code!

The max memory card capacity is 2GB. Atleast thats what it says on Nokia homepage.

I upgraded from 5.00 to 5.51 and everything works great now except two things: The battery life has now diminished. Seeing as how others have seen this from previous revisions, I won’t count this as much.
As for the other issue, It is minor but bothering me. I cannot find where to turn off the camera sound. Before it was in “Camera > Options > Settings” but I cannot find it there now. Does anyone know where the setting is now?

I tried to follow instuctions to back up info, and found discrepancies. This may be a little piddly, but I would have liked specific instructions. For anyone confused, I looked up isntructions in my 5300 on how to back up data from phone to memory card. Here is what the phone said…
1-At Main Screen, select Menu>Fun&Apps>Gallery
2-Select the folder that contains the files you want to move.
3-Scroll to the file.
4-Select Options>Move
5-At Memory card select Move to.

i’m having trouble upgrading my 5300’s firmware to V5.5. half way down the process when the phone is in Test Mode and the upgrade is being installed, suddenly the NSU gives out an error ‘connection to phone lost’. i’ve tried reconnecting many times but it doesnt help. any ideas XpressMusic?

Initially i have FOTA settings but when i restore my factory settings,the settings are deleted now when i go to phone menu -> settings -> phone -> phone updates it displays select service provider but the list is empty. How can i update my firmware because my Nokia 5300 music player is not working.

right now im having some difficulties with my 5300. i forced to update it from v5.00 to 5.51. after the nsu download the firmware, completing 1/3 of the loading bar and turns the screen to blank, it saids that my phone is not detected. so i plugged out my phone to the usb, (tried to turn it on with the switch but nothing happens) remove the battery, turned it on, reconnected to usb and retry the nsu installation. so far, it finished the installation.
but after that, it ran out slower. the loading bar when i open my memory card stops (but can still open it). and some of my games now cant be played ‘cus of java errors.
can someone please help me…

I found the “Documents & Settings” folder, however the 5.51 offline files covers only about 20mb out of 23.8mb, so you still need an internet connection to achieve the update. It took me 15 minutes to complete the update. The folder is found at [X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\nsl_service_module_00001\vpls\www.dsut.online.nokia.com.oti.caresuite\Products] and you should paste the ‘rm-146′ folder from the extracted contents into the ‘Products’ folder.
Be sure to run the NSU first upto a certain step so that it creates the ‘Document & settings’ folder.

I had problems with my 5300. Couldn’t upgrade it above 3.92 (NSU didn’t find any newer firmware) and I think that the cellphone got somewhat corrupt (couldn’t use musicplayer, read textmessages and some other stuff didn’t work).
So what I did was that I used a software called J.A.F to flash it to 5.0, there after I used Phoenix 2007 to flash it to 5.51.
Phone is working really nice now, got it for free because it was “broken”.

I have a problem with my 5300. I installed new opera mini 4 but it can not connect on web. When I go on options/application access/communication/(network access or connectivity) it is set to not allowed but it won’t change. I even try to fix this problem with updating my phone software but it didn’t help. Firmware version 5.51. Can anyone help? Please! Any ideas?
P.S. I forgot to wrote, I can use internet with nokia browser and gmail client, and it works fine. Also I tried reinstalling opera 4 but nothing works and installing opera 3, witch was previously installed and worked fine, but it wouldn’t connect on web.
I live in Serbia and there’s no Nokia care centar. So please, any ideas?
I used in time when all my problem started firmware version 5 and I upgraded it to 5.51 and nothing happened.
And one more question is there any way to reinstall firmware but not by upgrading it, I need fresh clean install.

Hellow Siju, I suggest to you. U have already downloaded firmware v5.51 zip. U need to download to install service software (Phoenix Service Software) that is require to flash ur nokia flash rom.
and after downloaded and install ur firmware.

Just did an upgrade to v5.51 from v4.71, no bugs at all…
Everything went alright with the process, installation was complete… and all data back-up was done automatically…
only problem is… my loudspeaker volume has gone down about three times… how do I fix this ??

nah… fixed it frnds… had to install the software thrice…
2nd n 3rd time it only took 3mb…
yeah… the loudspeaker sound is clearer than it was before…

ciao mi chiamo giorgia..ho un problemino com il mio 5300.a volte si blocca e nn mi fa piu vedere la memory card cosi devo levarla e rimetterla..ho provato anche a formattarla ma niente.in piu ho provato a installare la versione nuova in quanto avevo la versione 3.05 solo che il problema è rimasto..inoltre alcune volte si blocca anche la linea e nn prende bn cosi devo spegnerlo e riaccenderlo..un altra domanda prima dell aggiornamento avevo cambiato il colore dei collegamenti personali che compaiono nel display adesso pero questo nn è piu possibile xche nn mi fa piu cambiare colore ma solo quello del menu rapido che pero ho disattivato cosa è successo?è colpa del aggiornamento? perfavore rispondete il prima possibile grazie..

guide For offline update:
REQUIREMENTs
Download Nokia Software Updater (NSU)from above.
Download offline firmware from above.
Internet connection even after download of the above.
After download of the above
Install NSU YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Any internet connection will do even dial up. Prompts restart.Restart PC.
Extract Firmware and install.go default i.e. go next,next….. till finish.
Launch NSU. YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Connect phone.
Go ahead till it identifies ur phone and suggests a firmware update.
THE VERY IMPORTANT PART:
Go to windows START>RUN copy and paste this line to RUN and hit enter “%PROGRAMFILES%\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\”
copy the file “rm-146″.
Go to windows START>RUN again copy and paste this line to RUN and hit %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\nsl_service_module_00001\vpls\www.dsut.online.nokia.com.oti.caresuite\Products
paste file here overwrite.
Go to nsu click update REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION.
THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN ONLINE UPDATE AND OFFLINE UPDATE IS SEEN HERE.YOU WILL NOT NOW REQUIRED TO DOWNLOAD 25MB. BUT U WILL BE REQUIRED TO DOWNLOAD THE REMAINNG PORTION OF THE FIRMWARE WHICH IS AROUND 6MB. THATS WHY AN INTERNET CONNECTION IS REQUIRED. IST SAFE TO UNPLUG THE PHONE WHILE ITS DOWNLOADING THE REMAINIG 6MB.NO PROBLEM HERE SINCE FLASHING BEGINS AFTER FULL FIRMWARE IS IN PLACE YOU WONT BRICK YOUR PHONE. BE SURE YOU FOLLOWED THE ABOVE STEPS.
It worked for me. Picked up the soloution from reading the above thread.

i have this problem with my 5300.
you see, some reason, whenever i try to apply a theme the message “UNABLE TO OPEN. THEME CORRUPTED.” appears. i already updated my firmware (v5.50) and still the themes won’t open. not even the default ones.
people are saying that i have to reflash/reprogram my phone. what does that do exactly?
i was wondering if you could help me please?
