Canalys research shows that Symbian remained by far the largest smart phone OS by shipment volume in 2009, increasing in absolute terms despite losing share to the much faster growing RIM, Apple and Android.

The capabilities of smart phones continue to increase, further distancing their functionality from other mobile phones and enabling the creation of a broadening set of applications. Canalys estimates that the proportion of smart phones with Wi-Fi rose to 84% in Q4, while 83% had integrated GPS and 43% featured integral keyboards – new highs in every case. [As reported by Canalys]
